Logitech M720 Triatholon Multi-Device Wireless Mouse Review

When Logitech announced their new “multi-device” wireless mouse last month, I got so excited, I pre-ordered it for $69.99 without inspection. The reason for my excitement is because I have 2 desktops and a laptop that I sometimes use simultaneously. To make things worse, I use an external mouse on my laptop because I hate the way the touch-pad works. Having 3 mouses (meese?) on my desk is almost unmanageable. This one mouse will allow me to control  all 3 of my computers with just one mouse!

But I digress.

After receiving it in the mail, I quickly wanted to read the manual to see how this thing worked. Of course, as it is customary these days, there is no printed manual with the product. The product page is here:

But, as you can see below, there is no online manual. Hey, that’s fine. I’m a tech savvy guy, right? I can figure this out.

That same page has a link to download the “Logitech Options” application that allows you to setup the mouse. Not only does this app allow you to change the way the buttons work, it also notifies you when the battery is getting low. Nice features.

The first thing I needed to do was to connect this mouse via Bluetooth so that I can use the included Unifying Receiver on my other computer. However, for the life of me, I could not figure out how to do this. Using the “Add devices” did not find anything and using the Windows 10 Bluetooth setup did not work either. I’m sure I’m doing something really stupid but with no manual and no instructions inside the application, it wasn’t obvious how to do this. After a couple of hours, I gave up. I decided to continue the next day.

The next day, I tried to use my new M720 to wake up my computer from sleep as I always normally do. Huh? The mouse doesn’t wake up my computer. Strange. I use my keyboard to wake up my computer but my mouse still does not work. I notice that the “1” light on the mouse is blinking. I assume that means that it is not connecting to my computer but I’m not sure. When I click on the second and third buttons on the left (to switch computers) the “2” and “3” lights do not blink like the “1” did. I assume this means those are not connected.

It appears that the M720 cannot properly go into sleep mode along with the computer. It seems to get disconnected and cannot re-connect for some reason. Of course, this would normally be explained in the manual, if there was one. I was never able to reconnect and had to connect my old wired Logitech mouse.

When I figure out how to properly make this mouse work, I will do a re-review of it. Perhaps, there will be a firmware upgrade or at the minimum, a manual for it later. Logitech seems to have sprinted the “Triathlon” out the door before it was ready. For now, stay away until they work out the bugs.
