August has been shipping their smart lock since October of 2014, which will be reviewed here shortly. In the mean time, August has announced a $50 device that will connect the smart lock to the Internet via your WiFi. It seems like it would be better to just have WiFi connectivity directly on the smart lock but that would drain the battery quickly. This seems to be a good way to keep the battery life reasonable while giving August another device they can sell to their users.
Of course, the Connect will have to be within 100 feet of the smart lock to work. Luckily, August will not be charging a monthly fee for the new features of being able to unlock the door from anywhere in the world.
