FreedomPop Adds Free 4G LTE Hotspot

FreedomPop previously offered free 3G hotspot accounts over the Sprint network, but now will start offering the Sprint 4G LTE network.

As with the 3G account, they will offer 500MB per month for free but keep in mind that Sprint does not offer 4G LTE everywhere so you’ll have to check to see if it’s available in your area. To use this service, it will cost you $149 to buy their FreedomSpot 5580 LTE mobile hotspot which will allow up to 10 connections and and 10 hours of battery life, depending on usage.

It all sounds great except when 4G LTE is not available, you won’t have any reception. If you want to be able to use 3G also, you have to pick one of the pay plans. That’s the big gotcha with this service. Their original 3G service will end in 2015 so I’d better get as much use out of it as possible, and hope that by 2015, Sprint will have their 4G LTE network everywhere so I won’t have to use 3G.
