Tesla recently had an event where they showed off their 90 second automated battery pack swap system. Using the service will cost the owner extra, but they also will have free “Superchargers” that will give the car 50% charge in about 20 minutes. Tesla is aiming at owners being able to drive coast to coast by end of 2013, and 80% national coverage by 2014 and 98% coverage by 2015.
Wait a minute. Did he say free charging for the life of your vehicle? Or at least as long as Tesla stays in business. So theoretically, I could not only not ever have to buy gas, I don’t even have to pay for electricity. That’s a game changer.
How will other auto companies compete with free? That’s hard to beat.
