Sasabune Sushi Review

After pretty much being stuck on Sugarfish for 3 years or so, I decided that it was time to find another upscale sushi restaurant. But being the lazy person that I am, I didn’t want to travel too far. After looking around, I found a place on Wilshire called Sasabune Sushi and decided to try it out.

This place is located next to a mall and you can park free at the mall because the restaurant has like 3 parking spaces behind the building. When you arrive, the hostess will remind you that they only have sushi and nothing else. When they say nothing else, they really mean it. No tempura. No yakitori. Nothing.

Also, the sushi is traditional Japanese sushi. You won’t find any California rolls or Dragon rolls. To get the full treatment, we decided to get the “Trust Me.” Basically, the sushi chef makes sushi until you tell them you are full.

The meal started with some Seared baby tuna (w/sweet sauce – $26) & Albacore sashimi in ponzu (see picture below – $15). Next up, Blue fin Toro tuna from Canada ($26), then Red snapper ($6), Halibut ($5),  Oyster ($6), Half shell scallop ($6), Mussel clam w/ creamy baked mayo sauce ($6).

The basic course follows with Yellow tail ($3) and Salmon ($2.50). then for exotic, Scallop ($7), Sweet shrimp ($8). Next set for basic is Bonito with seal sauce ($3), and Scallop ($7), then exotic Spanish mackerel ($3), and Mackerel ($2.60), then shrimp head.

Next, some Cod, Ikura ($5), Uni ($8), Kampachi ($3), Pike mackerel, Giant clam ($8), Monkfish liver ($4), Sea eel ($3.50), Blue crab roll ($7), and Toro roll ($10).

Total damage was $180 for the sushi. To prove that this is a traditional sushi place, no charge for hot green tea. Everything that we got was extremely fresh and prepared perfectly. As one would expect, the service was impeccable.

All in all, if you want the freshest traditional, authentic sushi, and price is no object, this is the place for you. They also have another one of these in Beverly Hills and other cities listed on their website. You might also see some celebrities eating here once in a while.
