Shunji Japanese Restaurant Quick Review
In my constant search for new and better sushi, we decided to try Shunji on Pico in West LA, just a few blocks from Mori Sushi. Just like Mori, the outside is nothing to look at, and there are just a few parking spaces available.
We decided to try the Sushi Omakase as shown below.
Disappointingly, the portions are tiny and although the fish was fresh, they were so small, I couldn’t really enjoy the taste. The waiter even decided to explain why they were so small, without us asking. As any attorney would tell you, too much explanation makes you look guilty of something.
One other big complaint was there was a fish bone in one of my sushi pieces. It’s been many years since I’ve had that happen. This shows a lack of attention to detail that should not happen at any good sushi restaurant.
At the end, the shrimp head comes out still moving around, so if you’re squeamish like my friend, maybe skip that dish.
Although there were 3 waitstaff swapping duties, only one checked and refilled my free green tea. The others would bring my food and never ask if I need a refill. This reminds me of the bad service I used to get at the Brentwood Sugarfish. Moreover, the initial person that took our order, although very personable, did not properly explain the dishes to us. That’s bad for business. And lastly, the 3rd waitstaff asked us what we wanted at the end, then brought out what we didn’t order. She was nice about swapping it but this type of thing should never happen at an upscale restaurant, especially at these prices.
Between the fish bone and the bad service, I cannot recommend this place, and I will not be returning.
