Freedompop is how offering free global mobile service for $1, including shipping. They will send you a SIM card that works on the AT&T and T-Mobile network, which will work in many countries. If you have an unlocked AT&T or T-Mobile smartphone, this will give you 200 minutes of talk, 500 text messages, and 250MB of data for free each month. For one month, you get unlimited talk and text, and 1GB of data. But if you don’t downgrade your account, you will be paying $20 a month. Of course, for most people, 250MB of data is not going to be enough if you actually use your phone, unless you only use it with WiFi.
Oh, and did I mention you get a free selfie stick too? You have to use that special link to get the free selfie stick though.
This would be a good way to use your old AT&T phone as a backup in case your real phone goes missing. But make sure you don’t accidentally have your cloud backup settings on or some other app that eats up your data.
